Presence -Sense

Presense Sense is my thesis project for the Interactive Telecommunication Program. It involved creating subtle continual and unobtrusive connections with remote people, places and rituals using house hold objects. The following exercise entailed creating a ceiling lamp in my apartment in Brooklyn. The lamp is networked and displays the position of the two ships sailing the seas of the world. My two brothers are on board on these two separate gas tankers. This contraption connects my small space in nook in New York City to the remote places where my brothers travel and projects their positions on the ceiling of my apartment.

Projections

The lamp is connected to the internet and works based on co-ordinates inputed by my brother onto an html page on his ship. These co-ordinates are then written to a text file from where they are parsed and through the xport and fed into the microchip. The microchip in turn controls motors which move the lamp and helps in the projection of the ships on to the ceiling based on the latitude and longitude given to it by the xport. Some tests with the projections can be seen in the above pictures. I will be uploading some recent pictures of the projections very soon. For the people who want to understand the more technical aspect of the project, some of my code is here.
